ROS 2 rolling distribution name brainstorming

It is time for a bonus brainstorming thread as we have an extra ROS distribution to name this time around. As described in the ROS 2 rolling distribution plans) post, a new ROS 2 distribution is coming shortly after ROS 2 Foxy. Like all other distributions this one needs a name. Unlike others this distribution will not have a fixed end date and so the name will stay with the ROS community for the foreseeable future. We’ve also decided to break the sequence and provide two potential first letter options: R and T. But stick with either R or T, no “Rapid Trionyx” or “Trivial Rhinoclemmys”.

Existing ROS 2 names and codenames:

  • Ardent Apalone - ardent
  • Bouncy Bolson - bouncy
  • Crystal Clemmys - crystal
  • Dashing Diademata - dashing
  • Eloquent Elusor - eloquent
  • Foxy Fitzroy - foxy

Existing ROS 1 names and codenames:

  • Boxturtle - boxturtle
  • C Turtle - cturtle
  • Diamondback - diamondback
  • Electric Emys - electric
  • Fuerte - fuerte
  • Groovy Galapagos - groovy
  • Hydro Medusa - hydro
  • Indigo Igloo - indigo
  • Jade Turtle - jade
  • Kinetic Kame - kinetic
  • Lunar Loggerhead - lunar
  • Melodic Morenia - melodic
  • Noetic Ninjemys - noetic

Here are some links to turtle species to get us started.

Please share your suggestions and comments.

There are very few rules to this process so be creative.

Here are a few ideas to help kick off conversation:

I would prefer that the codename was still kept as “Rolling”, so Rolling <r-named-turtle>. Would still make a good logo and lets us continue with nomenclature developed in the REP.

Rolling Ridley would be the concrete suggestion, for example

Continuing our theme of potentially violating copyright with ROS names, there is only one R-turtle in my book.

What if we misspell it?

ROS Teenage Mutant Ninja Rolling Release?

I’ll put in a +1 for Rolling Ridley.

How about keeping that idea, but using the other suggested letter:

TRolling Turtle

there is only one R-turtle in my book.

and the logo has to have :pizza: somewhere

Definitely “Rolling Rheodytes”

Rheodytes leukops - Fitzroy River Turtle

  • “Rolling on a river turtle”
  • Rheodytes is “Fitzroy related” and Rolling is based off of Foxy Fitzroy.

Watching the bioluminescencec on national turtle day in San Diego has me thinking…

I really liked the C Turtle logo, and I’d love to see more artwork with sea turtles.

So +1 for Rolling Ridley; rolling releases like the rolling of the bioluminescent waves.

  • Rolling Reptilia (taxonomy class)
  • Rock & Rolling (Turtle rock)
  • ROS 2 Rock & Roll

While I was rolling along on my bike, a name occurred to me:
Rolling Roling Rolling… Rawhide!

Thats a good suggestion, but Fedora has a distro flavor called Rawhide as well and that might become confusing.

Still by far my favorite ROS distro artwork. Sometimes in slides I’ll remove the “C-turtle” from the logo and use it as an alias for ROS. All the robots running around is really great. The bioluminescence would be awesome.

+1 for Tempting Terrapin, because we’re always tempted by the bleeding edge.

Rolling Ridley also gets my vote.

Relevant trivia of the day! All Debian distributions are named after Toy Story characters. The rolling distribution (i.e. the bleeding edge, untested distribution) is named “Sid”, after the kid next door who spends all his time trying to break toys.

Rickrolling Rafael

Rolling/Rickrolling/Trolling in that order
