Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I think it’s unavoidable to change sensor_msgs/Range in, at least a minimalistic way - e.g. adding an enum value to radiation_type for RADIO. I’m going to go ahead and make the pull request and we can discuss the naming and architectural semantics there.
