Funded Ph.D. Positions (Robotic Pollination, Planetary Rover, Cooperative Navigation)

The Interactive Robotics Laboratory (IRL) at West Virginia University (WVU) is looking to fill multiple fully funded Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions at the Ph.D. level. Current research at IRL includes robot systems design, autonomy (e.g., decision making under uncertainty), perception (e.g., cooperative localization), and coordination (e.g., human-swarm interaction), with applications to planetary exploration, robotic pollination, among others. Please see our research demonstrations at https://www.youtube.com/c/WVUIRL.

IRL provides a free-thinking environment and state-of-the-art facilities that allow students to reach their full potential. At IRL, students are encouraged to develop their own creative ideas, supported by resource provided internally and from external sponsors. Many students at IRL have won prestigious fellowships and awards. As a group, IRL won the NASA (Sample Return Robot) Centennial Challenge with a total prize of $855,000.

Job Responsibilities: formulating research questions and conducting exploratory research; robotics algorithm development; robot systems design, programming, integration, and field testing; writing scholarly articles; leading projects; mentoring undergraduate and junior graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications: prospective students should hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science/engineering, automatic controls, mechatronics, applied mathematics, or other related disciplines. ROS is used for robot software development. The candidates should also have excellent verbal and writing skills in English, should be motivated and capable of creatively working in a team environment. Interested candidates should apply to WVU Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (for ME or AE degrees) or Lane Dept. of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (for CS, EE, or CpE degrees).
