The Open-RMF PMC has recently kicked off a discussion on traffic management interfaces for the next generation of the Open-RMF project. At the next session of the Interoperability SIG we will talk through the initial proposal and then open up the session for discussion.

We are eager to get feedback and input on this interface proposal. We are especially interested in ascertaining whether these interfaces will be able to provide both the capabilities needed by interested parties and also the level of modularity necessary to help grow a robust open source and commercial software ecosystem.

If you don’t normally attend these special interest group sessions, please don’t let that stop you from attending. We are happy to have newcomers, and we want to get the broadest possible set of perspectives on the challenges of interoperability, especially among mobile robots.

Here’s a quick summary of what we’re hoping to achieve through these new interfaces:

  • A modular design that allows custom and interchangeable implementations of robot dispatching, motion planning, and task execution capabilities
  • Alignment with Nav2, VDA5050, MassRobotics AMR Interop, and any other similar standards so that all of them can integrate seamlessly with minimal effort
  • An easy integration experience for any other mobile robot APIs, whether open specifications or proprietary
  • Be suitable for both AGVs and AMRs while still getting the best out of both types of mobile robots
