The Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI), lead by Prof. Michael
Beetz at the University of Bremen, is looking for highly talented and
motivated, full-time entry-level researchers (PhD students) to join
our dynamic, international, and multidisciplinary team. Our institute
offers exciting scientific projects, as well as an excellent and
stimulating research environment.
We have several openings as a part of the Collaborative Research Center
(CRC) Everyday Activity Science and Engineering (EASE), funded by the
German Research Foundation (DFG). In-depth information on EASE’s

We provide an excellent and stimulating research environment. The
successful candidates will enroll at the graduate program of EASE with
the goal of obtaining a PhD degree in Computer Science. PhD students of
the EASE graduate school will take part in a variety of exciting
technical and soft skill courses.
All EASE researchers have full access to our modern robotics laboratory.
It is home to two mobile dual-arm service robots (a PR2 robot from
Willow Garage, and a custom-built robot with KUKA LWR4+ arms), diverse
robot manipulators, motion tracking systems, Virtual Reality equipment,
and a small mechanical/electrical workshop. Spacious, realistic, and
fully-stocked mock-ups of a kitchen environment and a supermarket store
complete the laboratory. Several of our robot demonstrations, designed
to showcase parts of our research, have gained high-visibility in the
community, including robots preparing meals (pancakes, sausages,
popcorn, pizza), safely organizing surgical tools, and long-term pick
and place in human environments.
The successful candidates will be employed at our institute as research
assistants. The positions are remunerated according to the TVL-E13 pay
scale of the German government (starting at 44k-50k EUR/year gross
depending on your experience), and are limited to four years.
High dedication to perform leading-edge research in AI-based robotics.
In-depth knowledge and skills in one or more of the following fields:
artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge representation,
robot perception and vision, and control.
Excellent coding skills, including in-depth experience in some of the
following: developing in Linux, ROS (http://ros.org), C, C++, Python,
CMAKE. Ability and desire to learn quickly and get to know large code
bases. A history of open-source contributions is desired (if you have
one, please mention your public github account in your application).
Ability to work as a part of a team developing com plex integrated
robotics systems, and desire to work on open-source robotics projects
Experience in working in robotics teams or in robotic competitions
like RoboCup, RoboCup@Home, and similar is a big plus.
Completed academic degree with excellent grades. The degree should be
equivalent to an European MSc (or German Diplom.) in the fields of
Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics,
Cognitive sciences, or related fields, and it should qualify you for
enrollment into the PhD program of the Computer Science Faculty of the
University of Bremen.
Proficient in the English language in written and spoken form. If not
a native speaker, please include a proof of proficiency in the form of a
certificate: TOEFL iBT (score >=94), IELTS Academic (score >=7),
Cambridge English Certificate (level c1 or c2). Some knowledge of the
German language is helpful.

Plan based control: Experience in LISP (Common Lisp)
Knowledge processing: Experience in knowledge bases / Prolog programming
Virtual Reality, simulation, imitation learning: Programming using
Unreal / C#
Computer Vision: skills developing in OpenCL / CUDA
Robot motion control: whole-body controllers, robotic grasping,
integrating perception into motion control loops
General responsibilities of research assistants:
- Contribute to teaching
- Develop and maintain software for robots and robotics systems
- Present research results at international conferences
- Support the group in the writing of grant proposals

Bremen is located in northern Germany, and is a wonderful city with high
quality of life, many green areas, good public transportation, and an
extensive bike lane system. The University of Bremen has a campus on the
north of the city, with a 15min Tram connection to the central railway
station and a 30min connection to the airport. A public transportation
ticket is issued to students and it covers Bremen as well as most of the
state of Lower Saxony.
