Is there a ticket for this?

I’m not sure if they made a ticket for it, but hopefully it is possible, since ReadTheDocs (which also uses Sphinx) apprently supports markdown with recommonmark (GitHub - readthedocs/recommonmark: A markdown parser for docutils), see:
