Unlocking the puzzle of seamless robotics integration - Jigsaw Jicotea :jigsaw::turtle:

Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about a theme called Jigsaw Jicotea. It emphasizes the intricate and interconnected nature of robotics, where both software and hardware components fit together like the pieces of a puzzle.

(Burn all my time on Midjourney to made appear the puzzle tortoiseshell )

The name “Jicotea” is inspired by the Central American river turtle (Dermatemys mawii), an endangered species. This theme highlights the importance of seamless integration in ROS 2 while drawing parallels to the complex and interconnected world of robotics.

Just like a jigsaw puzzle, every piece of a robot has its place, working together harmoniously to achieve a common goal.

What are your thoughts on Jigsaw Jicotea?

how about Jazzy Japonica or Jovial Japonica?
Japonica comes from Japanese pond turtle (Mauremys japonica)

Jazzy Jicotea, or
Jazzy Jackson’s
WIth this year’s ROSCon happening in New Orleans, it’d be a miss not to name it Jazzy!

+1 for Jazzy. It sounds :saxophone:

Those are some really nice renders, a couple of those could essentially be the new logo!

I like the jigsaw element on the turtle shell, that’s clever. Even if we don’t use that for J-turtle, that feels like something we should do something with…

A Rolling logo, perhaps?

Thanks for the compliment on the renders! I really appreciate it. You’re right, in Rolling, integrating new packages is like solving a puzzle, making the jigsaw theme a perfect fit. If the community would like to use my turtle art, I’d be proud and more than happy to share them. :turtle:

I’m with you on the J version, Jazzy :saxophone: or Jolty :zap:!
Personally, I lean towards Jolty, as it has a unique and unconventional spirit.

So my vote:
+2 for Jolty Jicotea - dynamic sounding and creative.
+1 for Jazzy Jainemys -smooth with a complex vibe.

Will the next version have a Jazzy or Jolty spirit?

To all those posting proposed images, AI-generated or otherwise: due to IP and copyright issues, doing so pretty much guarantees that the proposed image won’t be used, nor anything similar to it, and makes using the name difficult as well if we can’t think of a sufficiently different image.

As a paying subscriber of Midjourney, I have the rights to use the generated images for various purposes, including commercial ones, as long as I adhere to the General Commercial Terms.

However, I understand the importance of respecting IP and copyright concerns, and I want to make it clear that our discussions here are focused on exploring creative ideas and establishing a direction for the design. If necessary, we can work together to find alternative solutions or create new images that avoid potential conflicts while still capturing the essence of the original concept.

I like the one with spaces between the jigsaw pieces, so ROS 2!

It’s not about whether you have the right to use the images, but whether the OSRF has the right to use an image that is based on or significantly inspired by it. The OSRF cannot risk being accused of copyright infringement if someone suggests an image here and we procure an image completely separately that is still similar enough.

It’s the same reason writers and authors will tell you not to send them story ideas.

+1 for Jazzy. (or Jolly, or Jurassic)

While I think the Adjective + Turtle is fun, and keeps it unique, practically speaking the adjective should standalone as a good name on its own, since that is how it is referred to in many places (package names, branch names, file-paths, etc.).

This is really rubbing off on me. Think (don’t post) of the stickers! We could make pins!

I originally was thinking Jazzy would go well with Harmonic (Gazebo LTS) and ROSCON in NOLA.

But I really think the winner is Jurassic in my book. As we get to witness the extinction event for not only ROS 1 but also Classic Gazebo in 24.04. Also it describes for those of us on Gazebo (not classic) and ROS 2 (and tired of dependencies mixing across) the “Harmonic convergence”/“great Jurassic culling event”.

When we fully wrap around the alphabet, we can make “C” turtle part 2 Cretaceous and have a dinosaur looking over the fossil of the Jurassic-period logo!

I think in the long game
