Education Working Group Meeting Agenda for 2023-08-30

Education Working Group Meeting 2023-08-30

Hi Everyone,

Our next Education working group meeting is scheduled for 2023-08-30T15:00:00Z . This will be another planning meeting as we start to ramp the working group up, and it will most likely be fairly short.

I also want to clarify the goals for this working group:

The goal of the ROS Education Working Group is to create a set of course materials (i.e. class notes, slides, projects, etc) for undergraduates that address the fundamentals of the Robot Operating System, and where necessary, aspects of robotics theory. These course materials will be compatible with ROS’s open-source development philosophy, and will be:

  • Easily and frequently updated to the latest ROS distro
  • Support contributions from the open-source community
  • Based entirely on open-source hardware and software
  • As much as possible be platform independent
  • Permissively licensed to support the creation of derivative works

Further Clarification: This working group WILL NOT BE TEACHING ROS DIRECTLY, we’re building the materials that others can use to teach ROS. If you believe this is a study group, you are mistaken.

Meeting Details:

Please add the ROS Community Calendar to your calendar.

Agenda:

  • [Kat | 1 min] Introduction
  • [Kat | 5 min] Recap working group goal:
    • The goal of the ROS Education Working Group is to create a set of course materials for undergraduates that teaches the fundamentals of the Robot Operating System, and where necessary, aspects of robotics theory. These course materials will be compatible with ROS’s open-source development philosophy, and must be:
      • Easily and frequently updated to the latest ROS distro
      • Support contributions from the open-source community
      • Based entirely on open-source hardware and software
      • As much as possible be platform independent
      • Permissively licensed and support the creation of derivative works
    • Further Clarification: This working group WILL NOT BE TEACHING ROS DIRECTLY, we’re building the materials that others can use to teach ROS. If you believe this is a study group, you are mistaken.
  • [Kat | 2 min] Briefly recap last meeting for new attendees
  • [Kat | 2 min] Would someone like to volunteer as a scribe / note taker?
  • [Kat | 2 min] Introduce committee chairs
  • [David | 5min] – Brief introduction
  • [Jack | 5min] – Brief introduction
  • [Glenn | 5min] Brief Introduction
  • [Kat | 10min]
    • Action Items for next meeting:
      • Would like each committee leader to organize an e-mail group.
      • Each committee should discuss how they would like to work (email vs. meeting)
      • Committee members should have a sense of how much time they can contribute on a weekly basis or annual basis.
      • Each committee should be working to understand the end-user and what would work best for them (e.g. what would a sandbox for ROS education look like for undergraduate students?). These decisions should be data driven, and be end-user focused.
      • Suggest that we organize a single, large-scale survey for educators with each committee contributing a section that answers their key questions.
      • Proposal: create a draft survey that collects the necessary information needed by the committee from educators.
  • [Kat| 5min] Next meeting – 2023-09-13T15:00:00Z and 2023-09-28T15:00:00Z

The updated sandbox committee survey (link in original post is closed).

I think Kiran Yelchuri volunteered to take notes. Do we have his discourse handle? Would it be possible to get those notes posted?
