What is the imprtant thing I need to know to have a high chance of acceptance in this?

The important thing you need to know is SOSS, I would say try to get familiarized with it as much as you can, run the examples and see if you can understand some of the source in it. On parallel you can try to do some research on other communication systems and improvements that can be added to SOSS, some of them are suggested (ZeroMQ or gRPC) but we encourage students to also do their own research and propose some extra stuff they might consider interesting.
On some tips when applying: better if you can show some preliminary work on SOSS and include a timeline on when and what you plan to achieve through gsoc.
