What do dashed version changes indicate? e.g. from 2.4.0-X to 2.4.0-Y
When I look at ros-perception/perception_pcl, I see no indication of a recent update to the 2.4.0 tag. Does this mean that a dependency of one of the perception_pcl packages was updated, so the package needed to be rebuilt (despite having no changes itself)?

Not exactly, no.

Let’s look at the whole thing. We can first see the entire version number with this command:

$ dpkg -l | grep humble-pcl-conversions

You can see that the version number is:

2.4.0-6jammy.20240217.082122

There are actually 5 parts in there:

  1. 2.4.0 is the upstream source version tag. That is, this package corresponds to the sources in GitHub - ros-perception/perception_pcl at 2.4.0 .
  2. -6 is the “debinc” number. This number usually increases when there is a change either to metadata in the packaging, or something else related to the packaging (though this does not indicate whether this package has been rebuilt recently).
  3. jammy - The Ubuntu distribution this package is for.
  4. 20240217 - The date the last time this package was built, in the form YYMMDD.
  5. 082122 - I actually don’t know what this stands for :).

So to answer your specific question, the fact that the debinc bumped from 4 to 6 means that some of the metadata was probably updated. Separately, you can also see that it was last rebuilt on February 17, 2024.

In this particular case, I released perception_pcl to add a patch for RHEL in an attempt to unblock this sync, but we found the problem to be more systematic and so decided to go with a more generic solution. The second bump to the debinc was to revert that patch.

There shouldn’t have been any changes to any perception_pcl code or metadata by those particular bumps.
