[CZ] (One of the) first talks about ROS in Czech! Jedna z prvních přednášek o ROSu v češtině!

[Short English summary]
Hi, I’d like to share my joy from giving one of the first public and recorded talks about ROS in Czech language. Apparently 99.8% of Earth population will not understand the language, and from the 0.2% of Czech and Slovak speakers only a small fraction will understand the content, but still! The ROS community in Czech republic has not yet formed anyhow official, but I hope the day will come :slight_smile: This talk was one of my attempts at starting disseminating ROS in the little piece of land in Central Europe.

Even for those who do not understand the language, there might be interesting visual content at the beginning of the talk (some SubT materials of team CTU-CRAS-NORLAB), a live robotic demo (!) and near the end of the talk (showing two homemade ROS-driven robots, including Notspot).

Zdravím české a slovenské robotiky a bastlíře. Na červnovém Installfestu jsme měli přednášku “Robotičtí záchranáři jedou na open-source”. Úvodní část přednášky je věnovaná účasti FEL ČVUT na DARPA SubT Challenge, prostřední část se snaží představit všechny možné užitečné aspekty, které ROS poskytuje, a v závěrečné části ukazujeme pár menších robotů řízených ROSem, kteří se dají postavit i doma (omni-wheel autíčko Matybot a Notspot).

Dlouho jsem hledal nějaké materiály o ROSu v češtině, a byl jsem celkem zklamaný, že jich úplně moc není. Našel jsem výbornou, byť teď už 7 let starou, přednášku dr. Materny na OpenAltu 2015 a trochu delší cheat sheet z VUT. Tím jsem v zásadě skončil. Víte někdo ještě o nějakých dobrých materiálech o ROSu v češtině?

Hi and thanks for very nice talk!

Do you think there is a target audience for Czech written tutorials? I can think of high school students, but that group comes with a whole set of knowledge, which should be included/linked to on top of ROS itself (basics of Linux, electronics, etc.) and still should be (in my opinion) slightly pushed towards English written sources.

That’s the hard question. My general approach is “doing robotics without knowing English is impossible”. However, I personally know a few friends who struggle with English and if they can choose between an English-written tutorial and one written in their native language, they prefer native. It’s one struggle less for them when they’re learning new things. The same has been reported by a few Bc. students at CTU (most courses tend to write teaching material in English).

My idea is that there could be an introductory tutorial that teaches people the core concepts, and whatever more they want, they will have to switch to the English-written materials.

The concept sounds good! I can try to contribute as my (limited) ROS knowledge and free time allows.

Maybe explaining the absolute basics in more visual way (something like simplified and better color-coded rqt graph) would also help.
